10/11/2024
Like most Saturdays, 10 November 2024 was a very busy day!! It started with Mayor Aki-Sawyer meeting with the German Ambassador and the German Foreign Office Director for Sub-Saharan Africa. Then she spoke to about 100 pupils from Leone Preparatory School about the history of Freetown City Council, the structure of local governments and the importance of the environment (trees planting) and sanitation. She was thrilled that the children committed to becoming “FCC Sanitation Ambassadors” – who won’t throw litter on the ground and who will spread our message!
Next, she attended the graduation ceremony of young women who had successfully completed a 5-week cake making and decorating skills training program in Congo Water community. This free program is the initiative of Cllr Agnes Marah and it is empowering young women with skills to start a business and earn a living! In her address to the graduands, she encouraged them to work hard and build a good reputation for their craft, pointing out that many big businesses started small. This was followed by the launch of the Dynamic Midwifes’ cervical cancer smear campaign. This incredibly important activity is led by a group of amazing midwives who are prepared to use their own resources and raise additional funds to ensure that women’s lives are saved through early detection of cancer. She was full of admiration and gratitude to the healthcare workers who serve the country under difficult conditions and who are still willing to go the extra mile to do more!
