🚨 Urgent: Open Letter in Response to Announced Plans to Divide Freetown into Two Cities 📄 #SAVE FREETOWN

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team Supports Freetown City Council to Create Detailed 3-D Maps of the City

FCC is thrilled to have Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) representatives Ivan Gayton and Pete Masters here this week to support with the creation on high quality detailed 3-D maps of the entire city. FCC secured the services of HOT funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Although the initial focus was on maps to facilitate the city’s work on upgrading informal settlements, the 3.5 week exercise will produce a detailed 3-D map of the entire city which will be an invaluable tool for FCC, for other city stakeholders and for our residents.

One set of users will definitely be the 5 companies that FCC has recently contracted to work with us to provide waste collection services in the city. Their operations will commence within the coming weeks as we roll out a sensitisation campaign and implementation of the recently matured FCC 2025 Sanitation Bylaws. More details on this to come!

On Monday FCC had an initial meeting with the HOT representatives, along with visiting representatives from Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and local partners CODOHSAPA and FEDURP during which they explained to me the drone technology and the mapping approach that would be used.

This afternoon, the Mayor joined the teams in Crab Town, Aberdeen and was taught how to fly a drone! She was then able to share her new-found knowledge with children from a nearby school as we participated directly in the creation of the maps. This mapping exercise also provides training and skills development with about 20 young people (from informal settlements, FCC and Ministry of Lands) participating.
