Last week Friday 15th May, the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr had the honor of commissioning the newly constructed perimeter walls at both the Kissy Road and Ascension Town cemeteries, projects undertaken by the Freetown City Council as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the security and safeguard the final resting places of Freetonians.
The scope of works included a 126-meter perimeter wall and gates at Ascension Town Cemetery, as well as a 304-meter wall and gate at the Kissy Road Cemetery. With a combined project value of circa NLe1.5 million (Le1.5 billion old leones) the perimeter walls were fully funded by FCC’s own source revenue. This is made possible because of the payment of property rates and business licenses by Freetonians!

The Mayor was delighted to be joined at the commissioning by her Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk Esq., councillors, including the chairpersons of the Education and Assets Committees, FCC staff and community members.
Protecting the final resting places of Freetonians from vandalization, theft and neglect is a priority for Freetown City Council but this can only be achieved with the support of Freetonians. During the handover, the Mayor emphasised the importance of residents continuing to fulfill their civic duty by paying taxes and property rates, as these contributions make it possible for us to meet the infrastructure needs of our capital.
With the support of Freetonians, FCC looks forward to upgrading and maintaining appropriate standards for all of FCC’s 15 cemeteries.
