FCC targets Ojuku, Kolley Town & Kroo Bay communities with 275,000 trees

2/10/2024

With support from the World Bank under the Productive Social Safety Net and Youth Employment Project (PSSNYE), and Bloomberg Philanthropies , Freetown City Council, FCC on Monday, September 30, commenced the planting of 275,000 mangroves across three communities: Ojuku, Kolley Town, and Kroo Bay. This project is part of FCC’s efforts to restore #biodiversity and enhance livelihood opportunities for residents, particularly those reliant on artisanal fishing.

The 12-day exercise in each community is crucial for restoring Freetown’s coastline, providing habitat for marine species, and capturing carbon to combat climate change. The initiative,

part of the #FreetownTheTreeTown Campaign, aims to plant, nurture, and digitally track over 1 million trees across the Western Area. At the end of the planting, community youth, employed as part of the project, will digitally track all the mangroves planted.
