Development partners, Freetown residents, support Freetown Cable Car Project

10/10/2024

On October 9, 2024, Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr presented the Freetown Cable Car Feasibility Study to representatives from the Traders Council, Market Women, student groups, women’s organizations, as well as members of the diplomatic community. A day earlier, on October 8, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr submitted the report to the Honorable Vice President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr said, the feasibility study, conducted over a period of two years and funded by the C40 Cities Finance Facility, confirms the technical and financial viability of a 3.6 km pilot cable car line which will run from Government Wharf to Kissy Ferry Terminal. The line will include 5 stations and a total travel time of 15 minutes. The project will also incorporate solar power, with fares competitively priced at NLe16 for the entire route.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Human Development Lead at the British High Commission, and the French Chargé d’Affaires pledged their countries’ full support for the Cable Car project. They acknowledged it as an effective solution to Freetown’s transportation challenges, highlighting its potential to improve air quality and its positive impact on vulnerable groups, particularly those living in informal settlements. Other speakers, including representatives from student groups, the Traders Council, and women’s organizations, praised the project as a significant development milestone for the Freetown City Council.

Nefartiti Nasralla of the Annie Walsh Memorial School said the current school buses are insufficient and sometimes they are overcrowded, which leads to inappropriate encounters with our male peers. The Cable Car will provide a clean, safe, and more affordable mode of transportation. “We want to thank the Mayor of Freetown for bringing this innovative system to Freetown,” she said. During another stakeholder engagement on October 10, the Feasibility Study was also presented to a diverse group of professional bodies, including the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers, the Sierra Leone Institute of Architects, along with property developers and construction companies.
