On August 9, 2024, FCC began demolishing structures constructed on illegally reclaimed land at Kroo Bay. The “land”, created using waste deposits, has been a major source of pollution for the ocean and beaches. But more significantly, those living on that “reclaimed land” are very exposed to the risk of flooding and the risk of being washed into the ocean by high tides. The demolition follows a series of community engagements by FCC with residents.
FCC will engage over 200 Kroo Bay residents (including those who lived in the demolished structures) in a year-long project to plant 75,000 mangroves in the community. The planting initiative is part of the #FreetownTheTreeTown, and is funded by the World Bank.
