On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr received a high-level Chinese delegation from Hunan Province, led by Lai Mingyong, Vice Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. The delegation was accompanied by His Excellency Wang Qing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Sierra Leone.

The meeting highlighted China’s support to Sierra Leone and explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Freetown and Hunan Province, with a focus on urban transformation, medical cooperation, cultural and educational exchanges, and sports development. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr thanked Hunan Province for its continued medical support to Sierra Leone and emphasized the value of expanding medical scholarship opportunities for Sierra Leoneans.

She also briefed the delegation on FCC’s Transform Freetown – Transforming Lives development agenda, highlighting key initiatives such as the Freetown Cable Car Project and other priority areas aligned with the FCC’s four-year development roadmap. Lai Mingyong on his part, said, among other areas, they would like to support Freetown’s economic and social development in line with mutual trust and cooperation. He extended an official invitation to Mayor Aki-Sawyerr to attend the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, scheduled to take place in Hunan Province in June 2025.
