FCC Empowers Tree Growers with Training in Tracking, Monitoring & GBV

11/9/2024

This week FCC is conducting a six-day training program for 1,750 tree planting beneficiaries on tree planting field operations, tracking and monitoring of trees, grievance redress mechanisms, operational health and safety and gender-based violence, in alignment with Environmental and Social Framework guidelines.

These tree planting beneficiaries are being incorporated into FCC’s ongoing #FreetownTheTreeTown campaign which adopts a community-driven, participatory approach to engage youth and women from vulnerable communities. Aligned with the Transform Freetown-Transforming Lives Development agenda which aims to create 120,000 decent jobs for women and youths.

The PSSNYE Green Public Works initiative which this training relates to is creating 2,000 direct short-term (6 months) employment opportunities for youths. With funding from the World Bank and in collaboration with NACSA, the tree planting component of PSSNYE has already facilitated the planting of 250,000 trees across 13 catchment communities. Another 300,000 trees will be planted and tracked by the trainees from next week bringing the total trees planted and tracked under #FreetownTheTreeTown to 1.2 million! Tree planting is a critical nature based solution for addressing climate change related challenges such as landslides, flooding, water scarcity and poor air quality which also creates green jobs and builds skills.
