C40 Co-Chair launches Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund

28th May 2024

In the ongoing global efforts to address climate change, the youth have emerged as powerful advocates and change-makers as their passion, energy, and determination have catalyzed movements, pushed policymakers, and sparked a global awakening to the urgency of environmental action.
Recognizing this, last week, the C40 Co-Chair who doubles as Mayor of Freetown City, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, last week, launched the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund in Freetown, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering young leaders and amplifying their voices and impact on climate.
The Youth Climate Action Fund, a beacon of hope in the fight for a sustainable future is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the Freetown City Council, to provide vital resources to youth-led projects and initiatives tackling climate change.
At its core, the Youth Climate Action Fund is a testament to the belief that transformative change begins with the next generation. By investing in the ideas, innovation, and activism of young people, the fund not only addresses immediate environmental challenges but also nurtures a generation of environmental stewards equipped to tackle the complexities of tomorrow.
The launch of the fund marks a pivotal moment in the climate movement in Freetown and a clear message that the voices of young people will not only be heard but also actively supported in shaping policies, driving innovation, and fostering sustainable solutions in addressing climate change.
From grassroots campaigns to technological innovations, the projects supported by the Youth Climate Action Fund span a diverse range of initiatives. Whether it’s reforestation efforts, renewable energy projects, sustainable urban and vertical agriculture practices, or climate education programs, each endeavor represents a crucial step towards a more resilient and sustainable future.

Moreover, the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund for Freetown serves as a platform for collaboration, mentorship, and knowledge exchange. By connecting young activists and entrepreneurs with experienced mentors and resources, the Fund cultivates a dynamic ecosystem of innovation and impact.
As nations globally confront the existential threat of climate change, the launch of the Fund offers a glimmer of hope and inspiration as it underscores the power of collective action, the resilience of youth-led movements, and the potential for meaningful change when investment is made in the passion and potential of the next generation.
In the face of adversity, the youth are not waiting for permission to act, they are leading the charge towards a brighter, more sustainable future. And with the support of initiatives like the Youth Climate Action Fund, their vision for a healthier planet is closer than ever to becoming a reality.
