Mayor Aki-Sawyerr Hosts Minister of Water Resources and World Bank Team at the FCC Kingtom Wastewater Treatment Plant

It was a pleasure to this morning receive the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Hon Dr Hannah Max-Kyne, the World Bank Country Manager Abdu Muwonge, the World Bank Water Global Practice Manager Anna Cestari, and other members of the Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership Council at the FCC Kingtom Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Alongside our implementing partner GOAL SL, myself, Climate Action Committee Chairman Cllr Unisa Kamara and FCC ESO Mustapha Kemokai, explained how the construction and operation of the FCDO funded Wastewater Treatment Plant were designed to meet one of the #TransformFreetown Sanitation targets – to increase the safe collection, management, and disposal of liquid waste.

The delegation saw firsthand how the sludge is being used to create compost for agriculture, and biogas and briquettes for clean cooking. It was exciting to discuss with these WASH experts how the plant could be replicated in the East End of Freetown. It was also exciting to see how interested they were in the innovation utilized in creating the compost, biogas, and briquettes!

We will continue to engage and collaborate with the World Bank and the Ministry to ensure that we further improve on liquid waste management in Freetown.
