We are happy to resume today our Universal Tree Tracking (UTT) initiative in Catchment 6, Mayenkineh Community, Calaba Town, one of 14 catchment areas where over 1.2m trees including mangroves have been planted. This phase of the exercise targets the deployment of 1,000 community tree trackers and 32 monitors to support effective data collection and oversight.
UTT strengthens the monitoring, protection, and management of Freetown’s urban tree population. Activities in the Catchment are being implemented under the supervision of the Civil Society Advocacy Network on Climate Change and the Environment Sierra Leone (CAN-SL).
Growing residential development in Mayenkineh has led to significant tree clearing, underscoring the urgency of this intervention. Through UTT, we are advancing efforts to safeguard and restore the city’s tree canopy as part of its broader climate resilience agenda.
