FCC and Partners Distribute 25,000 Trees Across Freetown

26/8/2024

In a committed effort toward environmental restoration, Freetown City Council (FCC) kicked off a three-day tree giveaway event on Friday, August 23, distributing and co-planting 25,000 trees throughout Freetown. Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, alongside partners including the Ministry of Tourism, #National Tourist Board, #IOM, #GIZ, and #Welthungerhilfe, led the symbolic planting of the first tree at Lumley Beach. The event on Friday also honored the late Sia Kamara, who was instrumental in championing FCC’s tree planting initiative, supported with funds from the #WorldBank and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

The trees planted as part of this effort will be digitally tracked to ensure proper monitoring of their growth. The tree giveaway initiative is a significant step towards enhancing Freetown’s #greenspaces. The designated locations for the 25,000 tree distribution include Bottom Mango, Aberdeen Road Roundabout, Dwarzack Junction, Lumley Mack Pharmacy, Calaba Town, St. John, Wallace Johnson Street Bus Halt, Upgun Roundabout, Shell, and Congo Cross.
